Remembering a Fremont Legend: Carmendale Fernandes 1924-2014

In Memorium: Remembering a Fremont Legend

Carmendale Fernandes (pictured above right) was a teacher at Fremont High School from 1946 through 1988.  Affectionately called Miss F by her students, she primarily taught English and forensics (now referred to as speech and debate).  For years she was nationally known for the steady stream of Fremont High School speech stars that she groomed and worked with from the mid-1950s well into the 1980s.  The list of her lifetime accomplishments and awards is extensive and includes two Hall of Fame honors from both the National Forensic League and the California High School Speech Association.

One of the greatest testaments to the difference that Carmendale made in the lives of her students took place this past August as former students from throughout the nation gathered in Palo Alto to celebrate Miss F’s 90th birthday.  The current FHS Speech and Debate team — along with their advisors Greg Lambrecht and Aisha Lomando — joined the celebration (pictured above), met Miss F., and even participated in an impromptu debate with former Fremont debaters.

The Fremont community wishes to honor the significant contributions of this outstanding educator and offers our condolences to her family.
